For many hundreds of thousands of people across America, yeast is a dangerous bacterium that can cause malfunctions in the body, including loss of energy, skin disease, asthma, or several other conditions. For these people, many yeasty foods have to be removed from the daily diet, including almost all store bought breads. Baking yeast free bread, however, is a simple way of continuing to enjoy a common daily food without straying away from a diet free of yeast.

But what ingredients are needed for baking yeast free bread?

The most common leavened bread, outside of yeast-leavened bread, is baked using oils, whole grain flour, water, and baking powder (which is used as the substitute for yeast). The result is a more dense loaf as opposed the more light and airy yeast-leavened bread. However, baking powder is but one leavening substitute.

Soda bread is another option, if baking at home. The loaf is comprised of self-rising flour, sugar, and an unsweetened carbonated soda beverage. The carbonation of the soda works in tandem with the self-rising flour and allows the dough to fill with air pockets, thus attaining that light and fluffy texture of store bought bread.

It is also important to obtain as many organic ingredients as possible. For example, enriched white flour is far more likely to garner excessive yeast growth in the body, as opposed to organic whole grain flour. Organic foods have less chemical residue and prevent possible yeast buildup.

One specific type of bread that is not leavened with yeast, but still contains a large amount of yeast is beer bread. As a substitute for yeast, beer bread is baked using a can of beer. The yeast in beer works with the flour and other ingredients to leaven the bread. But because of beer's high yeast content, beer bread is not an acceptable alternative when adhering to a yeast free diet.
