How To Create Healthy Powerhouse Sandwich Recipes

Making healthy sandwiches allows you the opportunity to utilize your creative talents in the kitchen once again. Sandwiches can be created as an entire meal, providing all the nutrients necessary for your healthy living.

To create a healthy powerhouse sandwich, use your imagination, by including herbs such as fresh basil leaves, cilantro or fresh parsley. Fresh watercress gives a sandwich a great nippy taste; in addition it gives an appealing look and has virtually no calories. Did you know that watercress is a good source of beta carotene, calcium, iron and potassium?

Fresh chives, which contain sulphur oil (which may lower blood pressure if one consistently eats a large amount), fresh romaine lettuce, is low in calories and high in fiber. Try to choose the dark green leafy lettuce; spinach which is full of vitamin A and folate, and high in Vitamin C and potassium, is an excellent choice for sandwiches as it is also a vegetarian source of protein.

When creating your sandwiches, try using sliced whole rings of green, red, or yellow peppers, as they are not only colourful, but an excellent low calorie source of Vitamin C.

Try using sandwich style sliced dill pickles (patted dry)or cucumbers sliced. Crisp fresh snow peas, are low in calories and high in Vitamins A and C. Snow peas, besides containing protein, help to create a nutritionally complete meal when combined with whole grain products.

Sliced beef steak tomatoes make a great addition to any sandwich. Try using asparagus or green capers on top of your filler. We have only the a few "green" and some red vegetable and herb ideas to season your sandwiches.

Fillings for healthy sandwiches are where we need to use care in calorie use. Always use a light Miracle Whip, light cream cheese or Dijon mustard. Light Miracle Whip and cream cheese taste just as good as the regular products and are one half or less than the calories and fat.

The most favorite fillings for sandwiches are hard boiled eggs, tuna, shrimp, roast beef, thinly sliced ham, smoked salmon in thin slices with cream cheese and capers, various light cheeses, such as Edam, Light Mozzarella, Provolone, Asiago, avocado sliced or in a spread, artichoke tapenade, Black Forest Ham, chicken salad spread, chicken breast slices,

Avocados, which incidentally, are fruits, are high in the "good" fats, meaning mono-saturated, but always remember they are high in calories and fats. These are only a few ideas, but, add the greens previously mentioned and you will have a deluxe healthy sandwich when a good protein is added to your greens.

The last item I will write about is bread, one of the most important items. The healthy breads to look for are logically the ones that contain whole grains, oat, flax, spelt bread, rye bread. These breads contain the "good" carbohydrates that constitute a healthy food choice.

White flour breads have no nutritional value for our bodies. Please try to introduce these good choice breads to your children at any early age, so they will become accustomed to eating healthy bread for healthy living.

Creating healthy appealing powerhouse sandwiches is a learned craft; you will be using all the necessary nutrients of a healthy meal for healthy living. There are a multitude of other types of healthy sandwiches, party sandwiches, rolled sandwiches, pinwheel roll-up sandwiches and even wraps to enjoy creating for you and your family.

You will be surprised at just how creativity bursts out in you when you start making these healthy recipes. These breads taste marvelous, but, it is sometimes a chore to talk children into them. Start children with a good 100% whole wheat bread that is fresh. I am certain that once you add the choice of good healthy items for the sandwich covered with the good bread, your child will love it. Later on, you can slowly introduce other varieties to him/her.

Fortunately, we now have available to us bagels, crusties, and many breads with 100% whole wheat plus many other nutrients in the breads for healthy living.

If you are making sandwiches with sauces, it is easy to eliminate butter or margarine. Replace it with mustard, low-calorie Mayonnaise, light cream cheese. It will eliminate 100 calories to your sandwich.

We have given you a start on your creative power sandwich making. Use your imagination and run with it.

Healthy Wheat Free Sandwich Recipe

For anyone who is intolerant to wheat and/or wants to eat a very healthy lunch that is very satisfying and tastes good, this sandwich recipe is great. It is also perfect for vegetarians or vegans, as it contains absolutely no animal produce at all.

What You Will Need

Wheat Bread

Rye bread -- you can buy this from most health food stores. Nut butter -- for example: Peanut Butter, Cashew Nut Butter, Almond Nut Butter, or Hazelnut Butter. Carrot. Lettuce or other green leafy vegetable (spinach, for example).
How to Make the Sandwich

Cut between 4 and 6 slices from the loaf of rye bread. Spread the nut butter liberally on all of the slices of rye bread. Grate the carrot, and then spread over the nut butter on all slices of the rye bread. Place several leaves of the green leafy vegetable over the top of all the grated carrot. Quickly flip the slices of rye bread together, being careful not to spill out any carrot or leafy vegetable. There you have it, 2 or 3 very healthy sandwiches for your lunch! Enjoy!

The great thing about this sandwich is that not only does it not contain wheat or meat, it is also a great way of having a perfectly balanced meal while out and about, as the sandwich incorporates all three of the components of a perfectly balanced meal:

Complex carbohydrate (rye bread) Protein (nut butter) Non-starchy vegetables

So, next time you are stuck for what to eat for lunch the next day at work, consider making yourself a few of these great sandwiches, as they will be sure to fill you up and keep you going all afternoon.

Quick Healthy Dinner Ideas - 4 Key Ingredients a Healthy Sandwich Must Have

If you already had a cooked meal for lunch, you will most likely not feel like cooking again for supper. After all, you've been working hard whole day. Now, you just want to get some food on the table quickly and then go enjoy your evening. It's anyways better to rather have a light meal instead of another big one.

Sandwiches are an excellent solution. They make great healthy filling meals but are still light - provided of course you choose low-calorie ingredients. And most of them go really quick and won't take much of your time to prepare.

There are endless possibilities of what you can put on your sandwich. Be creative! But make sure you choose from the following key ingredients:

Whole wheat bread
Low calorie spreads and toppings
Low calorie sauces and dressings
Salad, vegetables, legumes or fruit

Whole wheat bread

Whole grain products have several advantages over processed white foods. On the one hand, they fill you much quicker and for longer because they are high in fiber. That means, especially if you eat slowly, you are very unlikely to eat too much, and you won't get hungry again quickly.

You can use whole wheat bread, rolls, toast alternating to get more variety. Maybe there are even different types of whole wheat bread available.

Low calorie spreads and toppings

What would a sandwich be without ham or cheese? That's okay. But choose lean ham and low fat cheese so that your sandwich stays healthy instead of becoming a calorie bomb. Prefer fat reduced margarine to butter and buy low calorie spreads. Low fat cottage cheese makes great spreads when you mix it with some spices. But no matter what you use, don't put too much of it on as this will add up calories.

Cooked or grilled meat that you still got in your fridge also makes great toppings for sandwiches. For example, slices of grilled chicken breast, or the rest of your meat loaf. I also love to put shredded tuna on (canned in water, not oil!). Salmon slices are a bit pricy but taste delicious on a whole wheat roll topped with sliced onions and sprinkled with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Low calorie sauces and dressings

Sauces and dressings do a great job in making your sandwich special. Choose fat reduced mayonnaise and try to avoid ready made sauces since many of them contain quite a bit of sugar. If you do want tomato sauce on, apply only a thin layer.

Alternately, you can make your own healthy sauces and dressings at home, for example a salsa from canned tomatoes, onion and green pepper.

Salad, vegetables, legumes or fruit

Don't forget to put some really healthy stuff on your sandwich! Salad leaves are great and quick. If you have cooked or grilled vegetables at hand, mash them and use them as a spread on your meat sandwich. Or slice them. Home made salsa or baked bean salad is also a good option. Sliced onions taste great on sandwiches. And if you like it sweet, why not adding slices of fruit? Or pineapple rings or peach halves?

By including a big portion of these foods, you make sure that you got low calorie toppings with plenty of vitamins and minerals. This will contribute greatly to make your sandwich a healthy and filling meal.

If it comes to preparing the sandwich, you got plenty of possibilities to make it exciting. You can make a burger, grill any kind of sandwich in the oven, use rolls today and toast tomorrow... You can even make a buffet: Just put everything on the table and allow people to make their own sandwiches. Much less work for you and much more time you can socialize with your family.
